To learn to drive you must hold a valid signed provisional driving licence for a Category B (car).

You must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 20 metres for the new style plate e.g. AB51 ABC or 20.5 metres for the old style e.g. A123 BCD.

Learning to drive varies on the individual. The Driving Standards Agency recommend 40 hours with a professional driving instructor and 20 hours private practice with a family member or a friend. Ensure you are a named driver on their insurance to avoid a penalty for driving without insurance. Also, accompanying drivers must be at least 21 years old and have held a full UK licence for a minimum of 3 and a half years.

You need to complete the theory and hazard perception tests and the practical driving test before being allowed to drive unaccompanied on a public road. To pass the theory test you must get atleast 42 marks out of 50 and 43 marks out of 75 for the hazard perception.

The amount of hours needed varies for each individual. At Eddy Steady Go Driving School we believe in teaching you for what we believe you need to pass the driving test with as few minors as possible. For some learners this could be around 20 hours from beginner stage and for others it could be 40 hours+.

The practical driving test lasts around 40 minutes and includes various road and traffic conditions. To pass this you must drive to a reasonable standard, committing no more than 15 minor faults. One serious or dangerous fault or 16 or more minor faults deems the test a fail. You will do 1 manoeuvre when you're on the test and possibly an emergency stop. Additionally, a new part of the test as of October 2010 includes around 10 minutes of independent driving. This is not as hard as it sounds. The examiner requires you to drive following a pre-planned route off a card or a series of signs, or possibly both. The aim of this is to test your ability to drive independently without the verbal prompts from the examiner. It is NOT a test of your navigational skills and the examiner will help you if you forget where you're going. The test is basically everything you practice with your instructor.
